Seeing how Goodfellas is one of my favorite movies I am always excited when I can take a visit to Durant’s Steakhouse in downtown Phoenix. It’s legendary in this town and always is consistent with proper steaks and service. Don’t go through the front door or you might be laughed at by the hipsters already inside. The entrance for the gangsters is around the back and you walk right through the kitchen where the magic happens. I don’t like to disclose this info to people when I bring them there, I prefer to just whisk them in through the back while they are all confused so I can act like I own the joint. Fake it till ya make it.
It’s usually a bustling spot at night and can get quite backed up but you can huddle up in the dark ass bar and partake in a few adult beverages and enjoy some people watching. I went there once for happy hour and I swear I had some sort of slider and beer with sausage suspended above on a toothpick. It was goooooooooood.
The inside is blood red like an old school steak house should be. I like to start off a meal with 1 or 2 martinis as usual and the pours are proper. Ice cold with bits of ice chips floating and tall like Dhalsim from Street Fighter.
I forget what kind of soup they served after martini 2 but it was kick ass and the I pounded down a loaf of their special bread in no time. The little plate of raw veggies can be slid off the table as far as I am concerned, do people really eat that??
I always go for the filet and it never disappoints although this time I got an 8oz they do have a 12er which is my usual order. As far as my favorite steaks go this is right up there in the top 4.20. The criss cut fries are standard there but personally I prefer more of a shoe string fried tater like they do at Ruth’s Chris.
Durant’s isn’t the cheapest steak house around but it’s definitely worth the price for the ambience and meal. I try to make it there once a year if not thrice. Tell em Wild sent ya.
I give Durant’s a 4.5 out of 5. Thuggin. -hWild
